Used up your Leather? Here is the next step.
Checked October 16, 2026 · Full game · Source-based guide
You can make more Leather at a Workbench using Animal Hide from rats. The developer confirmed this in response to a player who had used their supply on backpacks. More Leather also appears deeper in the dungeon.[1]
From a rat to more Leather
- Catch a rat rather than attacking it. In the original community discussion, players report picking rats up before they retreat into rubble.[2]
- Process the rat in the crafting menu. The same thread identifies this as the way to obtain meat and Animal Hide. Holding the rat is not the processing action.[2]
- Take the hide to a Workbench. The developer's full-game reply confirms that this station makes Leather from the hide.[1]
Evidence scope: the Workbench rule is a developer confirmation from the launch discussion. The catching and processing instructions come from the earlier player thread; they were not tested by this site.

If the Leather recipe is missing
First check that you are using a Workbench, rather than looking only at hand crafting. The earlier rat thread includes players who had the animal or hide but could not see the next recipe.[2]
The developer also points to Leather in deeper parts of the full game.[1] That gives you another source while you investigate the menu. This guide does not claim a guaranteed first chest or a particular full-game recipe-unlock trigger.
Choose your next step
| Your situation | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Leather spent on backpacks | Use the rat-hide → Workbench chain; using the initial supply is not proof that all Leather is gone. |
| A rat is sitting in your hand | Open crafting and look for the rat-processing action. |
| You have hide but no Leather option | Check the Workbench menu, then record the missing recipe and your game version if it remains unavailable. |
We have not verified the exact full-game ingredient quantity, so no numeric recipe is supplied here. Older Demo reports and their resource limits should not override the developer's launch reply.
If the menu still does not match, include your version, station and a screenshot when reporting it on Steam Community (external, opens in a new tab).
